Why Pay Dues For What You Already Have?

As a Northwell team member, your pay and benefits package is better than that of NYSNA-represented nurses.  

Why put what you have now at risk? In collective bargaining, there are no guarantees. You could receive less, more, or the same as you do now. Why would you pay union dues just to get what you already have or maybe even less?  

It’s simple — you earn more and have bigger step increases than NYSNA RNs. In fact, you make nearly $15,000 more per year than NYSNA-represented RNs — that’s over 11%.

Health Care Benefits

In some Northwell hospitals where NYSNA-negotiated plans don’t match what you currently have, your plans are better in at least three ways:

  • Your medical plan is free after you complete four simple actions in our Well-being Paycheck Credit Program. These are designed to help improve your physical, mental, emotional, and financial health.  
  • You have free medical office visits with Northwell Health Physician Partners providers.  
  • You have almost no need for prior authorizations in the Northwell Direct Network

The best that NYSNA has negotiated matches what you have right now.

Retirement Benefits

LIJ

  • You are eligible for retirement as early as 55.
  • If you are 55+ with 15 years of service, LIJ provides you an annual $12,500 health care subsidy to continue your current medical plan. If you are 62+ with 20 years of service, you will have no premium payments for you or your family! LIJ’s retiree medical plan after age 65 includes a continued $2,500 annual subsidy plus dental coverage.

NYSNA

  • NYSNA-represented RNs aren't eligible for retirement until age 65
  • NYSNA doesn't have a retiree medical plan of its own and can't predict what will happen in negotiations.

Other Benefits

Here’s more of what you already have that NYSNA-represented nurses don’t.

  • Family Planning – 100% maternity care coverage at a Northwell Direct provider, fertility treatments including artificial insemination and assisted reproductive technology covered 100% up to a $45,000 lifetime maximum, surrogacy covered up to $30,000 lifetime maximum, and adoption assistance up to $40,000.
  • Parental Leave – Two weeks of fully paid leave from Northwell, followed by 12 weeks of Paid Family Leave for both parents. Birth-giving parents also receive up to 8 weeks of LIJ-sponsored disability benefits beyond New York State disability at no cost, up to 20 weeks of total parental leave.
  • Life Insurance – Pays 1.5x base salary up to $500,000 or choose to buy up to 5x your base salary to protect your family.
  • Dental – More choice with more than 14,500 providers through Cigna.
  • Tuition Assistance – $40,000 lifetime for a bachelor’s nursing degree, $20,000 lifetime when it is not required, and $30,000 lifetime for a graduate nursing degree.
