Ask NYSNA to guarantee its promises in writing

You have the right to ask questions and receive honest answers before making a decision about union representation.

To help you make an informed choice, here are some questions you could ask NYSNA, and get it in writing.

  1. Will NYSNA guarantee I won’t lose any scheduling flexibility under a union contract?
  2. Will NYSNA guarantee that a contract will provide better pay and benefits than what I get now at LIJ?
  3. Will NYSNA increase the supply of qualified nurses in New York, and how will they do so?
  4. How much are union dues, and will you guarantee dues won’t increase once they’re set?
  5. Will NYSNA guarantee I won’t be forced to pay union dues or fees to keep my job?
  6. How much of my dues will be spent representing LIJ’s RNs versus union overhead and political activities?
  7. If NYSNA calls a strike but I don’t want to abandon my patients, will NYSNA guarantee I won’t be pressured to walk the picket line?
  8. If NYSNA calls a strike, will they guarantee I’ll be paid my full wages during the strike?
  9. If NYSNA calls a strike, will they guarantee not to fine or penalize me if I cross the picket line to care for patients?
  10. Will NYSNA guarantee I can be on the bargaining committee if I want to be, and will my interests be addressed in negotiations?
  11. Will NYSNA guarantee that if we don’t like being represented by NYSNA, we can get them to go away at any time?

The only guarantee NYSNA can make is that they’ll charge you dues, but NYSNA can’t guarantee any improvements to what you already have.
