Why Your Vote Matters in the Union Election

LIJ wants to make sure you have all the facts you need to make a fully informed decision about voting in the upcoming election once it is scheduled.

Here are 3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE.

  1. If you don’t want a union and you don’t vote, you’ll still have to work under NYSNA rules and regulations as part of any collective bargaining agreement if NYSNA is elected as your union representative.
  1. Unions negotiate for the collective bargaining unit, not for your individual needs. This means you’ll be letting someone else make decisions that will affect YOUR paycheck, YOUR benefits, and YOUR job… without consulting YOU first.
  1. If NYSNA is voted in, it can be very difficult to remove them if nurses aren’t happy with them – a process known as decertification. Legally, LIJ wouldn’t be allowed to assist nurses, at all, with that process.

When it comes to this election, NOT voting is the same as voting for the union. Here’s why…

Union election outcomes are based on a majority of the actual votes cast, not a majority of eligible voters.

For example, let’s say 1,000 nurses are eligible to vote in an election, but only 50 cast a vote…
Of the 50 voters, if 26 vote for the union and 24 vote against it -- the union will then represent the entire group.

In this example, that means…

  • Only 26 nurses voting yes would decide whether the union represents all 1,000 nurses!
  • 950 nurses gave away the right to use their voice by NOT voting!

This is why your vote matters. This election isn’t decided until every vote is counted. And that includes your vote.

We encourage every eligible nurse to vote in the election. Don’t let someone else make this important decision for you.

Your VOTE is your VOICE. Please vote, and please VOTE NO.
